Introduction

Such aspirations have been a feature of “grand challenges”, which galvanize collaborations between governments, academia, and industry, directing the science sector to pursue “societal goals” (Kaldewey, 2018) in areas as diverse as health and development, global food security, climate change, energy, and aging populations.
